The Holy Spirit Throughout History #34: "The Spirit of Surrender” -- Romans
Please note that Romans 8 is not a deep theological treatise.
- My way, or Christ’s way.
- Fight to the death, or Surrender to the Life.
-
- It’s not intended to be deep.
- He is not yet speaking even to a level of maturity, which he gets into in chp. 12.
- He is not asking us to strive for perfection.
- TOTALLY not the point. Please keep that in mind. . . .
Rom 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
Rom 8:6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
-
-
- This is the Big Aha of chapter 8.
- It is the context. The plot. The subject. The Great Juxtaposition. The Central Theme.
- To derive anything else out of Romans 8:1-17 is out of context.
- This is a teaching on death vs. life.
- To set my mind on SIN = death.
- To set my mind on the Spirit = life.
